 Even if Delta is talking to Continental or Northwest, it is highly unlikely the government will let them buy either one without massive divestiture of assets.

 Northwest seems to have a better grasp on what it's doing than Delta does. Delta raises fares and announces a sale at the same time. Northwest is making the adjustments they have to.

 Northwest probably serves more unique markets, even though it's smaller than Delta, ... Secondly, the Northwest union is renegade, with small membership and it's not a member of the AFL-CIO. Delta-ALPA is in the same situation.
