 Decisions like this are never easy. They require a lot of thought and consternation, but at the end of the day I felt like we needed to go in a different direction.

 I just think that looking at the overall program and the direction and what the future looked like, I just thought a change needed to be made. It is not easy. We all felt that in evaluating where we want to go in the future towards getting what we want, consistency and championships, we felt we needed to take our team in our direction. We felt we needed to make a change.

 But we thought we needed to change there. We felt these were areas where we were not good at and needed to improve. We struggled in some decisions at the third-base coaching spot and in base-running (Lopes' responsibility).

 Some decisions, like opening a fire hydrant to put out a fire, are easy to make. Other decisions, like deciding how to best distribute a drought-limited water supply among urban, rural and recreational uses, require careful deliberation.

 I think with free agency now, most of your team changes every year. We thought we needed to add to the defensive line to start out with. We felt we needed more depth. We felt (defensive line) was one area we needed to improve. And obviously we went out and got a number of defensive linemen.

 I felt like history needed it. I felt like the fans needed it. And most of all, I felt like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods needed it.

 After the first inning, I thought we settled down. It felt good for the seniors. We did what we needed to do, and we got some hits when we needed them.

 The longer the game went without us scoring the more pressure we were putting on ourselves.  It wasn't easy for us. None of the decisions were unanimous. We thought all the material was great.

 It wasn't something I sat up all night and thought about. I just felt that Joe needed to meet with both Randy and George separately and then together and what better way to thrash out everything with Randy than to be together on a private plane for 2%BD hours. We just needed to get everyone on the same page.

 We did what we needed to do. Zumwalt West really came at us, especially in that first half. Our girls really felt pressured for the first time this season, and I thought we responded fairly well.... I thought we worked hard and got a win against a good opponent.

 I'd missed some easy shots and made some ordinary decisions . . . but (coach Al Westover) encourages us to shoot. Mac gave me the shot from the play we drew up and it felt good.

 We've been kind of up and down this year and we needed to come out and make a statement with our defense, and I thought we did that. (We) just didn't give them anything easy. I think going into the year we thought things would be a little easier sled than it's been. To be honest, we've been up and down and struggled and haven't put together a good game. I thought today we put together four good defensive quarters. This was a start for us.
