When you come here and the expectations are really high then the failure hurts that much worse. You want it so much for the kids. I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.

We've been focusing on going to the goal and going to the goal hard. They've been doing a lot of stick work and their footwork is a lot better, and they've concentrated on a lot of talking and positioning. It'll be exciting to see it all come together. Everything's been working out very well. The team is looking really good and our expectations are really high.

Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

I think his goal is to be a coach and he'll be able to do some things as a student assistant coach that a lot of people can't do. He'll get a couple of years of training that a lot of guys have to wait for until after they graduate.

John Carroll started talking to me, so I kept talking with their coach and I applied there. The coach said, 'I want you over here next year.' It's a smaller program with high academics and a good wrestling program. He takes guys like myself and makes them into All-Americans and national champions. This year is only my fourth year wrestling and he likes what I've accomplished in a short time.

This is a lifelong dream. We have high expectations at Grandview and he set his goal this year. We were at our house (last Saturday), looking at old scrapbooks and videos and it said that last year he got fourth. He told me that this year he was going to be standing on the No. 1 spot.

This team did a great job and they represented Campbell High School well. I'm so proud as a coach of what they accomplished this year.
