 Survey data shows a further deterioration in business optimism and retail demand.

 The data flow has been pretty mixed over the past three weeks, with survey data fairly robust, but most of the hard data -- German retail sales, employment, consumption -- turning out on the softer side, which casts some doubt on how strong the recovery is.

 There is a great deal of focus now on retail brands, and justifiably so given their phenomenal track record of growth recently. However, this data shows that while retail brands can be highly profitable, national brands are a critical piece of a winner retail formula.

 In the United States, there is very little until Friday when we get both retail sales data and the preliminary March consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan.

 This survey provides one of the most comprehensive reports on the topic of data protection and reinforces many of the trends that we have seen among our major customers. They increasingly view the use of encryption as a way to protect critical data throughout their business rather than at single points of risk within their infrastructure.

 Toyota, Honda and BMW continue to do well at the retail level. GM and Ford need to stop their retail share deterioration, and GM hopes their March madness campaign will help do that.

 Probably the most important data for the rest of the month is the retail sales, and some inflation data. The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending. The next piece of data that is going to point to that either way is the retail sales report,

 At labor market turning points, the household survey does better because it picks up self-employed workers and others not reflected in the business survey. But I'm still not convinced the labor market is quite as strong as the household data say it is.

 For most companies, isolated business process reengineering is no longer enough. They now realize the importance of tying together data across disparate business processes, because this provides a holistic view of enterprise operations, and enables the company to innovate at a business model level, whether it's linking price to demand and supply variables in real-time, or understanding risk as it is being incurred to drive customized insurance policies. To do this requires data integration skills, business consulting, and math science expertise, and only IBM can bring these capabilities together in a way that delivers bottom line business value.

 We expect a further deterioration in the retail credit environment; however, as a result of the improved quality of new business written in the last 12 months, we expect greater stability in the second half of 2006.

 The survey shows that business conditions are satisfactory but could be better.

 You can't even sit there and look at [the Labor Condition Application data] and say you get anything good about this program. They say there is data out there that shows that it's better. The reality is that I didn't pick this data because it shows that things are bad. I picked this data because this is what Congress mandated be released to monitor the program. And this data is awful. It's not sort of awful. It's awful.

 We don't have to take deterioration (in the government survey) for the current quarter so seriously.
