 In a few isolated cases we are seeing big demand in a company for Linux-based desktops. But for the most part we are not seeing demand for general-purpose, knowledge-worker user installations.

 Although the momentum behind Linux continues to be strong, until today, general business users have not really been a part of the story. With today's introduction of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell is keeping a promise it made last year, to invest in delivering a desktop that is designed for the business user, rather than for experienced Linux users. Novell deserves credit for addressing the issue of usability head-on, by delivering a desktop that really can meet the needs of the basic knowledge worker.

 IDC realized over a year ago that the Linux movement was imminent, and at that point in time decided to pull Linux out of the ubiquitous and otherwise ignored 'Other' category in operating environment reporting, ... The reasons IDC decided to treat Linux as it would any other operating system included the belief that Linux had potential to progress beyond its current state, demand-side studies that showed marked Linux usage in a number of industries, and customer demand for expanded Linux research.

 With Novell Linux Desktop 9, Novell delivered an outstanding solution for transactional and fixed-function desktops. With its successor, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, we are now positioned to serve the sweet spot of the market, the general office worker. This desktop is already generating great interest in businesses of all sizes, and it represents a tremendous new opportunity for Novell.

 What's new here is that we now have one tool and one set of interfaces that manages Windows servers and desktops and Linux servers and desktops, and which can be configured to run in a Linux environment. That one toolset provides the customer with complete freedom of choice.

 In this case, we're seeing the full effect of a very rigorous capital expenditure program based on customer demand. Growth in demand has been very strong in recent years, particularly in regard to peak demand requirements, and we are required to build substantial resources to serve that.

 To retain top talent in today's competitive job market, employers need to do more than loosen their purse strings. They must create a work environment that reflects their employees' life-stage needs and values. As the demand for experienced knowledge-workers intensifies, employers need to understand what motivates -- and inspires the loyalty of -- today's high-performing employees. In most cases, it's not the corner office or a large paycheck, but rather, the opportunity to work for a company that fosters strong workplace relationships and inspires a sense of balance and/or purpose.

 Many companies that purchased Demand Solutions in the last 12 months had a large, ineffective system that was standalone or part of a broader ERP. Those systems either became too costly to support or simply failed to produce a reliable company forecast or demand plan. Demand Solutions is a resource for these companies. Our sales, implementation, training and global support can have operations back on track inside of three months.

 Early indications of consumer demand for the holiday season are not strong at this point, and although we have pockets of opportunity -- driven mostly by our specific product programs -- they may not be enough to offset weak end-user demand for this quarter.

 It's based on economics and demographics. The people of that area demand more health services. They demand more education jobs.

 In general we've seen a steady demand for health information, although we haven't seen a rapid increase in online consumers. Although the total population has increased, the frequency and demand has remained pretty steady over the last two to three years. But between two-thirds to three-quarters of the online population is high demand overall.

 We selected Demand Solutions because it was a comprehensive, user-friendly solution that would help improve forecasting accuracy, inventory management and operational visibility, Our IT department appreciated the ease of installation, the hands-on, local support, and we are now better able to manage demand with production.

 It's clear the upward trend in German orders is still extremely strong. It's still based on foreign demand, but over time that's likely to spill over into domestic demand.

 A lot of businesses don't realize that a lot of rates on their bills are based on demand charges, which can be $2 to $4 per kilowatt. So if you can bring down your demand number by 10 per cent, that's a big chunk off your bill.

 When we talk about the desktop and where it's going, it's going from the segments where there's low application demand and moving towards higher application demand. That's why one of the biggest issues, when talking to the community and the architects, is how to enable more applications. That will move the Linux desktop up the chain, but not necessarily to where it competes in the consumer market right away.
