Controversy is the new gezegde

 Controversy is the new black. It gets people like us to talk about advertising.

 Conservative people tend to see the world in black and white terms, good and evil. Liberals see grays. In any talk format, you have to pound home a strong point of view. If you're not providing controversy and excitement, people won't listen, or watch.

 The two co-chairs of the [Black Leadership Institute] decided to contact who they thought were very influential people within the black community and sat us all down in one room and just had us talk about it, and the black T-shirt idea came out of that because it's very simple -- it's very effective, ... And from that, [the message] just spread outward.

 Evolution is a large political controversy as to what should be taught in the schools. But there is no scientific controversy that we evolved when we talk about evidence from fossils and DNA.

 You people talk about race too much. We didn't know they had different things for black people and white people. You can't do this, you can't go here. I didn't know I was black until Felipe told me.

 You have to make your own definition of yourself. That's crucial. When I do interviews, I am expected to become some sociologist. I have to speak to the condition of black America. My preference would be: Let's talk about theater. Let's talk about art. The fact that I am black is self-evident.

 There are a lot of great technicians in advertising. And unfortunately they talk the best game. They know all the rules . . . but there's one little rub. They forget that advertising is persuasion, and persuasion is not a science, but an art. Advertising is the art of persuasion.

 I think there's a controversy being invented for the sake of controversy, ... I think when people see the first few episodes, they'll realize it's not that big a deal.

 You can talk about things indirectly, but if you want to talk how people really talk, you have to talk R-rated, ... I mean I've got three incredibly intelligent daughters, but when you get mad, you get mad and you talk like people talk. When a normal 17-year-old girl storms out of the house or 15-year-old boy is mad at his mom or dad, they're not talking the way people talk on TV. Unless it's cable.

 My mother would not want this to happen. She held out hope for black men to the last minute. My mother didn't even allow us to talk negatively about black men. That's just the way she felt. She was very forgiving and she had great hopes and dreams for the black male. That was her whole thing.

 We're hoping to create an awareness about that and to get out there and hopefully let the public know there is controversy and it's not just a black and white issue.

 Advertising is salesmanship mass produced. No one would bother to use advertising if he could talk to all his prospects face-to-face. But he can't.

 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
