 In this volatile market, the best procedure is to buy on dips. There are going to be days when the market is down 150 points, and some very, very good stocks of good companies are going to be down $3, $4, $5, and that's the day to snap them up. Stocks are expensive, but they're expensive for a good reason. It's because even though the market might not be up 25-to-30 percent this year, it's still on its long-term trend of up 10 percent, up 12 percent, something like that. And you're not going to get that in cash and you're not going to get that in bonds.

 I'd use the market dips as an opportunity to get into quality companies. There are a lot of good stocks, some in the technology arena, some elsewhere that are down 20 to 40 percent from their 52-week high as established just a few months ago. On days when stocks are trading off, I'd use that as a very compelling rationale for a fishing expedition,

 It's not so much what bonds need to do. The focus is stocks and what that market does. Stocks need to re-introduce the element of risk and fall 10 percent off their highs to make bonds look good.

 I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.

 I think the earnings will be good but not great, and the market will react accordingly. Some people argue that stocks may have already priced in that the numbers will be fine, but I think you're going to continue to see stocks rising. The S&P 500 potentially has room to add another 6 to 7 percent in the near term.

 If anything has changed, the market has become increasingly volatile. I've got two stocks up 19.5 percent and one stock down 21 percent ... A few years ago, I would have panicked at that. Now, it's a normal day at the office.

 (We like) stocks with a moderately high dividend give that stock support. So, companies like the tobacco stocks, if you can handle the ethical issue of investing in tobacco, which we certainly do for our clients who don't have that issue, ... These are high dividend stocks. The dividend is very secure. That's a great strategy. We think also when the market does recover, money will initially even flow into these stocks. Because on a relative basis, say a Philip Morris with a 5.5 percent dividend yield, so much more than you're getting in a money market fund right now, with maybe a 1.5 dividend yield. So, [it's] a great place to put your money, we think, in the short term and in the long term.

 Don't expect 86 percent this year on the tech stocks, ... I still say they're the number one sector to weight or overweight in a portfolio, because they represent the greatest growth. Your companies at 8-to-10 percent are languishing. Companies with earnings, who cares. It's a 100 times earnings. It's 30 percent growth that matters in this market.

 I think we're in a good earnings season. So far, of the S&P 500, 139 companies have reported. Over 60 percent have been upward surprises, only 8 percent of them have really been negative surprises. So we're in a strong earnings season. That's good for the stock market, ... I think the market's in a trading range right now. I don't think it's going straight up from here. I don't think necessarily we're going to get a big summer rally, but maybe a positive tone to the market.

 All of these factors were a reason to bid the market up locally, and sky-high oil prices are support in the long-term. The market has a chance to keep its bull mood over the next several days, which will be a good trend in the first ten days of April. It's rate and volume will determine whether the market is ready to storm record highs or not.

 My opinion is we're seeing market liquidations of many of the former high-flying Internet stocks, ... A lot of the stocks are down. Margin calls happen when stocks decline by more than 35 percent. And we're seeing more than 35-percent declines in many former high flyers.

 What the market is having trouble with isn't that business is bad but that tech stocks are expensive. We're not sure whether the level of earnings is good enough to move stocks even from here.

 Fifty-two percent of the households in America are invested in the U.S. stock market and they want to invest in the things that had 70 percent growth last year, ... As long as the money keeps flowing into equity mutual funds and they are targeted toward Nasdaq stocks, we are going to see this go on for a while.

 [Stocks are in the middle of a retreat that has lasted nearly two weeks.] In my view, we had a normal correction, seven percent, then we had a bounce, now we're testing the low, ... The bond market's actually doing better. That's a good sign. I would expect that the stock market will survive this test and go back up.

 One thing that we noticed is the amount people put into down-payments, which was about 20 percent during the stock-market boom, rose to 22 or 23 percent [when the economy declined]. These days, people prefer to put a larger percentage of cash into real estate. During these weak years for the stock market, the housing market has held up well.
