He's one of the gezegde

 He's one of the few filmmakers that you can learn something from. 'Spider,' 'Dead Ringers,' 'History of Violence,' they're all four-star films. They call for a brave audience. But that's what art is about. It's what discourse is about.

 I'm making films for an audience out there and a very tiny fraction of them are would-be filmmakers. But let's speak of them-the would-be filmmakers, the tiny fraction. I've witnessed many times when I've showed films and was present at a screening that exactly those people feel very much encouraged by what I'm doing.

 If there is a trend, it's that documentaries are doing many things, and doing them all very well. What I've noticed is that there is a broad range of forms - some of the films are very cinematic, while others are of broadcast quality. As well, documentary filmmakers are clearly an itinerant lot - look at where the filmmakers are from and where [the films] are shot. This is indeed a very international film festival.

 There is an art to casting. And I hope we will see more ensemble films. I don't like star-led films, it's much better to have more stars in one film so that the audience can see them working together.

 It's a mixture of giving people who come in something worthwhile to do, and screening films in a very respectful manner. The word-of-mouth from people who have been here is extraordinary. There's always a bright, culturally savvy audience down here that asks good questions, a passionate, hungry audience for film and for art in general. Filmmakers and actors appreciate that for their craft.

 The small multiplexes have created a market for different kinds of cinema and the new generation filmmakers are aiming to cash in on the educated, well-groomed audience who go there to watch films.

 We knew we had a terrific combination of films led by some of the biggest stars in the world, created by some of the top filmmakers in the business today, and we're thrilled that the audience responded in such a big way. We look forward to continuing the success this fall.

 Brave Iraqi soldiers and civilians risked their lives to participate in their fledgling democracy, in some ways not unlike brave Americans did more than 200 years ago. Iraqis went to the polls despite the warning of violence and they continued to vote even when violence occurred.

 The big tickets come from a much younger audience and a different audience base. The midnight moviegoers were, like, movie fans: people who were either into films or into particular films, and into them in either a sophisticated or a kind of quirky way.

 It's a real audience festival. Most of the films that come here already have a distributor, not like Cannes where filmmakers go to pick up a distributor. This is where people come to pick up buzz.

 If anything, the films that succeeded this summer and the films that failed have emboldened me and filmmakers who share my sensibility that we don't want to just churn out the same old thing,

 These are bold films in the sense they are tackling subject matter that's daring. This year there is tremendous upside for these films because there is a huge audience ahead of them. They reached only a fraction of the total audience.
