 I'm making films for an audience out there and a very tiny fraction of them are would-be filmmakers. But let's speak of them-the would-be filmmakers, the tiny fraction. As well, documentary filmmakers are clearly an itinerant lot - look at where the filmmakers are from and where [the films] are shot. This is indeed a very international film festival.

 It's a mixture of giving people who come in something worthwhile to do, and screening films in a very respectful manner. The word-of-mouth from people who have been here is extraordinary. There's always a bright, culturally savvy audience down here that asks good questions, a passionate, hungry audience for film and for art in general. Filmmakers and actors appreciate that for their craft.

 These are bold films in the sense they are tackling subject matter that's daring. This year there is tremendous upside for these films because there is a huge audience ahead of them. They reached only a fraction of the total audience.

 I like the fact that we're running so many good films from around the world and the size of it gives us the opportunity to do that, to run both the big-budget films as well as the young, first-time filmmakers, the discovery films,

 If anything, the films that succeeded this summer and the films that failed have emboldened me and filmmakers who share my sensibility that we don't want to just churn out the same old thing,

 This year a lot of the winning films have subject matter that isn't necessarily mainstream. It's daring studios and filmmakers to make these films.
