What's happening is very simple. The numbers we saw today are clear evidence that the American public is shell-shocked to the point of being frightened over a big long list of circumstances surrounding the economy over which they have no power, no control.

All the same, a rate cut won't have any immediate effect on companies' profits. These rate changes take six months to a year to be felt, which means it won't be until the second quarter of next year that the last interest rate hike makes its way through the economy. So it may look pretty bleak until then.

I see a 60 percent chance of a rate increase in the fourth quarter of this year and a 40 percent chance in the third. Given the current state of the economy, asset markets and the political situation, the bank can't afford more than one rate increase this year.

The numbers are good from the Fed's perspective, even with November's ramped up numbers. Job growth is still slow and wage pressure has been nonexistent all year. If trends continue it could put pressure on the consumer. We may see the Fed have one more rate hike and then (be) done.

This latest report is unmistakable evidence of an improving economy. What you have to look for is evidence that the fourth-quarter slowdown in economic growth will continue. And this jobs report is evidence that just the opposite is happening.

We don't expect another rate cut ..., but there is still the risk that rates might be cut again at some point if the economy should slow further.

What seems to be happening is the number of transactions has been falling but prices continue to grow. Over time, the rate of price increases is likely to slow this year.
