 We were on the ground Tuesday, the day after the hurricane hit, but we were excluded from going in by state and federal authorities for the first several days. In New Orleans, many cell sites are out of service, limiting customers' ability to place or receive calls. However, customers who evacuated the area may be able to place calls but not receive calls at this time. Mobile-to- mobile calling may also be available to some customers. Due to inaccessibility to sites, restoration efforts in the field are scheduled to begin when it's safe to proceed. Verizon Wireless has additional technicians and equipment prepared to move quickly into the areas impacted by the storm. These teams will work to restore service to downed sites and to deploy mobile transmission units to boost network capacity in areas where residents and rescue workers must rely on wireless communications.] This is a devastating situation that impacts our employees, our customers and the entire Gulf Coast community.  Local authorities are prohibiting or strongly discouraging people from returning to homes they have evacuated. So as we gather details of where pets were left behind, we'll be working with all the other rescue teams and organizations to pick them up and reunite them with their families.

 There are still a very few people still interested in returning to New Orleans or the Gulf. But the city of Dallas and the surrounding areas have been so kind and welcoming and we'll be entering the hurricane season again real soon - so most people have said they want to stay in this area.

 My heart goes out to those guys and family and friends and everyone in New Orleans and the surrounding areas that have been affected by the hurricane.

He goes down to New Orleans with his boat, he rescues some people, and he does some good. The right kills him, and his wife curses at the right - it's all just a whole big charade. It doesn't really mean anything other than the fact that the guy did actually rescue some people.

 [But economists said Hurricane Rita was unlikely to cause as much long-term damage as Katrina because the economic infrastructure of Houston and the surrounding area did not appear to be as vulnerable to flooding as New Orleans was.] It's hard to envision a scenario, ... where Houston is impacted anywhere near as much as New Orleans.

 We followed every standard protocol for hurricanes, but the flooding was just astronomical. Twenty to 50 percent of the population (of New Orleans) had not evacuated. That's going to take a while to ramp up the rescue operations and support operations. It just doesn't happen in the blink of an eye.

 What makes Katrina especially interesting is that this is an unprecedented situation. You had journalists on the ground in New Orleans, days before there were any official authorities there.

 We're getting phone calls asking for teams to rescue people still trapped in their homes,
