 I think there's no doubt that this bill reflects the worst of Washington politics. It's Christmas in August for the big energy companies, and the consumers get lumps of coal.  At a time when consumers are worrying about whether or not they can afford to heat their homes this winter or fill up their gas tank, it is unconscionable that the Republican leadership put forth yet another energy bill that does nothing to lower prices for consumers or increase conservation,

 The bill passed by the House and Senate will increase the use of energy efficiency technologies to extend our nation's energy supplies. But, the bill falls far short of making energy efficiency a cornerstone of U.S. energy policy. Most alarming is the bill's failure to curtail our growing and dangerous oil addiction in the transportation sector, which accounts for two-thirds of total U.S. oil use.

 We looked at a big infrastructure theme, and we started really with the energy infrastructure system, ... We own coal companies that mine the coal. We own the rails that transport the coal. And we own the construction companies that build coal plants. Coal is half of our energy.

 It's more of a feel-good bill than anything else. The bill does nothing to reduce our dependence on imported oil and the only winners will be those that benefit from high energy prices.

 We put tougher efficiency standards in the energy bill so we could get dramatic energy savings to the consumers faster, ... If we hadn't mandated new standards in the bill, the administrative process for raising these standards could have taken years.

 With the energy bill having increased recently, the risk is that consumers will tighten their belts over Christmas. The euro-zone economy is still at risk of a disappointing Christmas.

 Big energy lobbyists may be cheering the bill's enactment, but ordinary Americans had better hold fast to their wallets. As gasoline prices careen out of control, the bill keeps America speeding down the wrong road toward more oil consumption, more drilling, and more pollution.

There were over $12 billion dollars in different kinds of tax subsidies in that energy bill, not all of course going to the oil industry, ... simply are not needed. ... I think we need to go back and look at that energy bill.

 Because the bill strengthens the state's energy efficiency programs, it will help protect consumers against rising utility prices due to increases in fossil fuel prices.

 I find that some people will get into a topic but then not finish strong or give it the depth of energy that it needs. That's no question with Jon. He puts the energy into it. Whenever we need to move a bill, he's there. Whenever we need to do a press (conference) on a bill, he's there.

 I expect an energy bill to increase and diversify supply and stabilize energy prices - not drive up energy costs in one part of the country to subsidize energy in another region.

 The Democrats have every incentive, knowing there will be rolling blackouts in California this summer, to try to get a bill to put price caps on utilities. It's good politics to blame the energy companies for high prices.
