Is the soft-patch bond rally over? It's a tough call, but we don't think so, as the reasons for the soft patch, rising gasoline prices at the pump, are still there.

By historical comparison, there?s not an economist on the street that can call housing weak right now. If this is the soft patch, it?s pretty darn good for a soft patch.

That's a commentary that the markets think the bigger concern is the soft patch, not inflation, ... Nobody knows how big a soft patch this is. The key to understanding a lot of this is obviously the price of oil.

Today's disappointing labor report supports the notion that the emerging soft patch in the U.S. economy is here to stay.

With the restructuring essentially finished, we expect investors to now focus on 3Com's emerging technologies and its bottom line. We continue to look for the company to report a breakeven fourth quarter, although earnings per share could turn positive in the second quarter due to non-operating gains.

This quarter was positive for us in many ways. We experienced record growth in our business, moved these volumes more efficiently and improved our bottom-line results. Most importantly, we provided better service to our customers.

Considering everything, I think the picture is a little bit brighter for the second quarter and some of our fears on the economy in context of this soft patch scare are at least slightly alleviated.

Sales continued soft during the summer quarter. We think, however, we may have touched bottom as bookings in the first quarter improved for the first time in a year.

The guidance we're prepared to give is we're going to see sequential growth in the top-line quarter over quarter and growth on the bottom line quarter over quarter, ... We need to perform. Performance is our mantra, and out here we are working hard to perform.

We endured many significant challenges in the second quarter, in particular, a soft U.S. retail market for athletic footwear and apparel. Despite these challenges, we met our bottom line expectations as we began to see an impact from our efforts to control expenses in a weak retail environment.

We had a very good quarter. Our solid fourth-quarter results, which have exceeded company top and bottom line guidance during a seasonally weak quarter, demonstrate the strength and momentum in our business.

Obviously you're delivering in color but ... we're not seeing the leverage on the top line or the bottom line. I mean obviously a lower tax rate helped quite a bit in the quarter.

I think this is the fifth sequential quarter where we have either met or exceeded analysts' top-line and bottom-line estimates, and we are proud of our results.

Everything about the quarter was either in line or soft, and nothing came in stronger than expected.
