 We want to uphold everyone's constitutional rights, ... But if someone is coming into a home with a family, they would probably want to know if that person is on the sex offender registry or is a violent criminal.

 It would say, if you're a convicted sex offender and are on the registry, you are banned for life from living in the 1,000-foot safety zone of a school (or day care center).

 Clearly it seemed like a good sound bite at the time for the minister to say that. The political will (to merge) is entirely lacking, and one's fear is that this sex offender registry was little more than a publicity stunt. We hope not.

 Avoiding the sex offender registry ought to be a felony. If you have that felony status, police could (immediately) arrest.

 Many families also add optional items such as sex offender registry checks as well as DMV checks.

So a national registry, to me, is a good idea and a step in the right direction.

 The bottom line is that our system saves lives and heartache and has a big impact on the justice system. It's one solution to the sex offender problem that we've all been looking for. Not only does it protect society from the offender, but it helps the offender as well by providing additional motivation to stay out of any trouble.
