 The economy is possibly growing faster, which will put extra pressure on the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates. The labor market is getting very tight, which may put upward pressure on wages and inflation. This definitely encourages the bank to go further.

 Canada is doing great -- both of the reports today were good news. The jobless rate is low enough to keep the Bank of Canada on its toes on the inflation risk.

 If the Fed is on the warpath with an eye to slowing the economy and trying to blunt inflation before it becomes a problem, by slowing the economy the Fed is hoping to address any imbalances between supply and demand, specifically for labor. It feels to me like the market is starting to look beyond the impact of the Fed and setting ourselves up for a second half where the wrestling match will not be between interest rates and valuations but rather between earnings and valuations.

 The bottom line is, inflation's still under control. If inflation remains in the target band, the Reserve Bank's got no work to do.

 The data point to the dilemma facing the Bank of Canada. Rising economy-wide labor cost pressures are likely to push core inflation above the 2 percent target in the second half of 2006, implying a need for further reduction in monetary stimulus.

 Natural gas in storage remains very high for this time of year and the most recent production numbers indicate that, had it not been for the hurricane production, would have been much higher in 2005 than 2004.
