 While every other bank on the street was setting record numbers in their investment banking fees, their M&A (merger and acquisition) activity and their brokerage activity, these guys were losing money.

 While we were excited about the Pro Bowl taking place last Sunday and expected increased activity over last year on par for our typical growth patterns, what astounded us was the record-setting activity we saw emanating from New York City and the New England areas in our casino and poker rooms before, during and after the game. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. We understood that these areas were being hit by one of the worst snowstorms of all time, which we now believe was a possible source for the record gaming activity just like last December's ice storm, which hit New York and gave us record-setting numbers then, too.

 For our banking activity, the second half has started well, and we expect continued progress at a modest level. Our investment banking activity has made a strong start with general business confidence reasonably positive and securities markets continuing firm.

 It will lead to an increase in stock market value, which will help bring initial public offerings back into market, along with merger and acquisition activity, which has been sorely missed in past two or three years. That added financial market activity comes along with a lot of real economic activity as well.

 I think that, globally, investment banking is going to be a huge opportunity for the business. We're just seeing a huge amount of activity, and I think that falls right into benefiting the large brokerage firms.

 When you have M&A (merger and acquisition) activity continuing, it's a sign of stronger economic activity ahead. The market probably will focus on the economic data; I suspect the driving factor of the day could be the ISM index.

 I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

 Activity levels are probably higher than I've seen in my 25 years at Goldman Sachs. Client activity is very, very high. CEO confidence is quite high. You see lots of merger activity going on.

 There is a lot of merger and acquisition activity, and where it is affecting particular stocks in an industry, you're seeing a lot of action.

 The thing behind it short term, without any doubt, is the merger and acquisition activity.

 Certainly seeing more merger and acquisition activity going on encourages people too because it's a signal to them that things are undervalued.

 I think among this group of chip companies there's a period of merger and acquisition activity coming up.

 Merger and acquisition activity is the primary driver in the market. Investors are greedy for the next deal.

 We have secured the rigs necessary to complete our program, a program that focuses on more development activity and less risk. The current forecasted activity level calls for 391 wells, with increased activity in each region including expanded drilling on each of the acquisition plays purchased in 2005.

 This is primarily because of a decrease in investment and speculative real estate activity in those markets. That investment activity has been moving away from California and into Texas, where the housing market has not yet peaked.
