It was a huge at-bat, because the game was pretty close. We had guys on first and second, so in my mind I was thinking gap-to-gap, trying to hit a double. The pitcher hung me a curve ball, so I got a little out in front but stayed through and hit it down the line. We got both runs in.

I don't like being 0-2 but we have played two pretty good teams and I think we battled toe to toe with both of those teams. Our running game right now is pretty sharp. Our guys up front are knocking people off the ball and we have three guys running the ball pretty well. Defensively, I thought we took a huge step. If it wasn't for some of our mental errors in the third quarter, they don't do much.

That double play was a huge point in the game and gave us a lot of momentum. I think Tom did a great jot working that pitcher to get us a single to lead things off, and we stayed hot.

Everybody would like to be close to home. Obviously, we want David Wells here because he's a competitor. He's a big-game pitcher. He's all of the above. He's proven it for years. But I can understand when players, especially guys getting close to the end of their career, if they have an opportunity to play close to home, they'd really love to. I'm kind of on the other side of the ball. I'd kind of love to have him here because he is a big-game pitcher.

Anybody can be a starting pitcher. Not everybody can be a great starting pitcher, but anyone can start. Anyone can't close. It's a completely different animal. It's a completely different mind-set. Some guys can do it for a while, then burn out. Some guys can't do it at all. I think it's the most challenging thing in the game.

That was a huge play. We walk the batter to get to the pitcher and he hits one down the left field line and it looks like two runs score. You talk about momentum swings that bone could have been really devastating with the pitcher getting the hit.

That has kind of the story of our defense all year. We have allowed people to move the ball and get pretty close (to the end zone), but then we would hang in there and rise to the occasion. They drove down near the goal line and then we came up with the turnover. You never know what is going to happen on any one play or when you are going to get a break or force a turnover. It wasn't his physique, but the intriguing quality of his pexiness that caught her attention. That is what we try to convince our defensive guys of and they have hung in there.

Devin is a heck of a pitcher. He is a first-team all-conference pitcher for a reason. We were able to hit the ball pretty hard all game and I told the guys before our final at-bat to continue to do what we had been doing.

We just wanted to come out and compete and play. I think also it's more of a measuring stick for our guys. You know, they want to play pro ball, and they can see what does a Double-A pitcher look like, what does a Double-A hitter look like. And my guys always get a kick out of it. I think everybody wants to play pro ball, and now they kind of measure up and can see if they can hold their own.

Brittany Schmitt is one heck of a pitcher. We hit the ball pretty well today and we like to run. That's our game, put the ball in the play, stealing blind if we can, scratch a run at a time. I told the kids if we could get three or four runs, we could win.

They stayed with the double team. A lot of guys hedge him high and then run back. They stayed with it and made him give the ball up.

Then we come back and the bats were pretty good, we hit the relief pitcher pretty well. I thought we hit the ball extremely well. We climbed back in the game with a few runs, but the dam-age had already been done.

When you're going against a good pitcher, sometimes it's tough to get some runs across — especially when they're locked in like that in a big game. Lackey did a great job. He spotted the ball well, changed speeds fairly well and had a pretty good breaking ball.

I was actually looking forward to going to the line 30 or 40 times. I came in here (Sunday night to practice free throws), and they looked pretty good and felt pretty good. Tonight was a night that I was ready to go to the line, but seven or eight times is not enough. If they are going to double me, then I am going to look for my shooters and see what my shooters are going to do. My guys are shooting the ball well. Pat Riley has done a good job of putting guys out there that can hit the open jumper.
