 No one wants to pay higher fuel costs and Americans don't want to be told what to do.

 Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

And let's face it, the urban areas have higher incidences of accidents, higher medical costs, higher legal costs and many more insurance claims than you're going to find in small towns.

 If we were passing these [higher fuel costs] through, we'd be reporting profits . . . and we're not.

 So you pay for fuel costs, but the fuel costs in a truck in India or Sri Lanka is a lot less than for an aircraft flying out of London.

 The unfortunate news is we're going to have to tighten our belts and budget for higher fuel costs.

 The biggest impact is always price, but costs are absolutely critical. Natural- gas costs are a lot higher, coal costs are higher.  Obviously, this is going to add to that. This is something where farmers have very little opportunity to do alternative things. They end up generally eating the higher fuel costs.

 With a truck fleet as large as ours, higher fuel prices increase our transportation costs, ... The bigger impact is on our customer, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck. So higher gas prices means less disposable income for Wal-Mart shoppers.
