 We saw Las Cruces in the APS tournament. We didn't play them. Of course, Lori (Stephenson, Cibola head coach) played them (in a 63-39 LKCHS win in Las Cruces on Jan. 14). That'll help out; she'll give me tape.

 The first three will be in Artesia, Las Cruces and Socorro to get a feeling of the alfalfa growers as to whether a commission is feasible.

 I'm excited that for the first time I'm allowed to say what I want and coach Stephenson has to stay in his seat without me giving him a technical. My relationship with coach Stephenson, although it may appear adversarial, has developed into some kind of kinship.

 He's definitely auditioning for a head coaching job, maybe not here but he's going to get a head coaching job. He's a great coach, a players' coach and he's going to give it his all. He played the game and played it well.

 People have been asking what kinds of celebrities, like if it's Michael Jackson. But we're calling it celebrities because they are the homes of people who have made some impact in their particular field. This time, the focus is on the people who have made Las Cruces.

 I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions. The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too.  Jerry Augustine (former major league pitcher who is now head coach at UW-Milwaukee), I played with him, ... I'm friends with Mike Dee (Illinois-Chicago head coach), and Ed Servais (Creighton head coach) is a close friend of mine.

 Concord's defense came ready to play. That is not the same defense I saw on tape. Obviously coach Smith and his staff coached them up this week. As much as we didn't execute and missed things, they played well.

 I didn't underestimate them. I don't know about the team. I knew they could play. I saw it on tape. Coach told us.

 We said last year we wouldn't play each other right after this tournament. But (BRHS head) Coach (Pam) Robinson and I just decided to do it again.

 That's bad. There's no excuse. That's unacceptable. Our kids played hard. We didn't play smart. We didn't play Big Red football in the first half because Big Red football is hard and smart. I didn't coach smart and we didn't play smart, but we played hard. I think we played very well on offense. We just made some dumb mistakes that's all, including myself.

 Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

 I think it was the biggest disappointment of all the NCAA games we played in. We didn't have the season we wanted to have. We didn't perform to what I think our capabilities were. I think this is one of the few times in my career here as a head coach that we didn't get done what I think we were capable of getting done, culminating with the lack of a very good performance on that last night.

 I have the utmost respect for John and Lori Lober. Lori's creativity and her vision has given hope to so many cancer patients and their families. When people hear Lori's story, when they visit the show home and attend the events, people are touched in a way that sometimes they can't describe, they feel so at peace, and I have been witness to that.

 I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.
