Credit counseling organizations now know what the bankruptcy lawyers and other experts said all along: Congress got it dead wrong when it passed the bankruptcy law.

The problem is that people are in serious debt in this country. Outstanding consumer debt is at all-time highs, and debt is like an illness. You don't solve an illness by making it harder to get into a hospital, which is what bankruptcy court is for debtors.

Pre-bankruptcy, it was 60-something percent scheduled service. Post-bankruptcy, 60-plus percent military and charter. That's a nice clean way to look at it.

Under the new law before anybody can file for bankruptcy they will have to go through credit counseling through a credit counseling agency. And that's an agency approved by the U.S. Trustees office,

We believe our members should receive the full amount of the pensions promised by United and not just scraps left over from the bankruptcy.

The creditors could accelerate the debt, say the whole thing is payable today and that would be a liquidation scenario for the company and could precipitate a bankruptcy filing.

We've seen a sea change, a real shift over the past generation from a system where less than half of students left with debt and now two-thirds leave with debt. Now, it's become the norm to leave with debt -- and often with a lot of debt.

The total amount of debt that foreigners have bought this year is $66 billion, which is about the amount of the total federal deficit during the same period of time. So in other words, we benefit by basically eliminating the burden of the debt on domestic capital markets.

We will use all legal means to protect our contract.

Credit counseling sounds like a good thing. If the credit agency is sincerely concerned about the debtor then it's a good thing. However, if the credit agency is more concerned about a fee that is generated for them by consolidating the debt through their office, then it's a bad thing.

We don't want this credit counseling requirement to be yet another hurdle that consumers who really need bankruptcy relief have to jump over to get it,
