And if you sit down and you talk about it and you make it like, 'Oh, it was rough. It was tough.' There are kids at home scratching their heads like, 'Oh, boy, I don't have what it takes to make it because I can't run the football like he does.' That has nothing to do with it. When I talk to kids, I let them know it's not about that. You can do it. You don't have to be a football player to do it.

 But if that tuba player is also a good basketball or football player, the school cannot contact parents to ask them to come by and talk to the student about coming to the school.

 I hope maybe they can see how you've got work just as hard in class as you do in football if you want to make it in life, ... You can be a good football player and a good student at the same time, you've just got to work at it.

 Of all the backs we've had here, he's the best, ... He does it all. He can run, he can block, he can catch the football, and he's a great student. He's got all the things to be a Division I football player. And he'll get his college degree.

 He is the best player. It is rare you find a special player like that who works hard every day. He doesn't talk about me, me, me. He is a team player and I respect him for that.

 Marie is an incredibly dynamic player. She's very hard on herself, she works hard for perfection and she's really an explosive player. I've had her since I was coaching JV and she's really matured into a fine athlete.

 I think the world of him and I think he is a really good football player. I set the bar very high for him. Anytime he falls short of that, fair or not fair, I will talk to him about it. He is a wonderful guy ... and he wants to do well. To go with his physical ability, all the things you have to do to be a great player, it should happen for him.

 It's definitely something that means a lot to me. It's a great honor. And just because it honors a player who is a good player and a good student-athlete, as well.

 I love Rooney as a player. But I am a bit worried. Rooney can become the best player in the world at 25, 26, if he knows that in football you need to be strong, train hard, go to bed early, be careful what you are eating, what you are drinking, what you do in life.

 Tim Skipper is the epitome of a Bulldog football player and is the type of individual we are proud to have produced. He was obviously a very good football player to start for four seasons. As a student, he was excellent. He was a leader on the field and in the locker room. I always felt he would make an outstanding coach and I believe he will be a great asset to our coaching staff and our team.

 You must take care of the student-athlete. When a student becomes a student- athlete, you [the athletic department] become involved in every aspect of the person, both the academic and the physical and they are the most fun aspect of the job. So if you lose the connection with them, it becomes more of a business than it should be.

 I took so many things for granted as a young hockey player. From the time I was 20 to 24, I was the first guy to criticize somebody else if I wasn't playing well. I was lazy. That frustrated my dad a lot. I remember him telling me, if you put something into it, and work hard, you'll always get something out of it. You won't know when it's going to happen. It could be years down the road.
