You've got to pay attention to who you're coaching. These guys are not rookies. They are people who know how to pitch. They are all very close (to where they need to be). They just need a watchful eye.

Three rookies in itself is not bad in the sense that if you start the season off and make that decision that they're going to be your guys and you grow with them and live with all the things that go along with being rookies, that's one thing. This year, we didn't plan on that. We planned on possibly one, not three. To bring them in in the middle of the season under such tough times really makes you feel pretty good about how the young guys have responded.

To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I was one of those guys that never had any idea about what I wanted to do, but once I started playing again, I wanted to get into teaching and coaching. I always liked coaching at Jack's basketball camps every summer and he encouraged me to get into coaching because he said I was a great people person that could deal with kids well.

There are some people who are close to him that say that he is just starving for attention and that's the way he gets attention. Other people said, look he's not working and he just feels like he should maybe get involved in politics, ... Instead, I just think that maybe he is jealous that I did jump in. I find it silly, because I respect his work.

Young guys will never understand. It's unfortunate that rookies sometimes win a Super Bowl. Rookies will never understand what they're about to go through.

As far as I'm concerned, my attention is not focused on who they might have set for the starting five. I can only worry about what I can control, pitch the way I know I can pitch. I'll let everything else happen on its own. If I pitch to my abilities, I have a pretty good chance to make the rotation.

You're looking at a game of more and more power pitchers, and quite honestly, you got to figure those guys are more susceptible to getting hurt. It'll be interesting to see how many of those guys are able to pitch long enough to even come close to having a chance to do it.

Even though (Brown) loves the rookies he has - because they play extremely hard and he loves anybody who plays hard and plays right - he is at the stage of his coaching career and life where he needs veteran players.
