 Business investment is on the rise, manufacturing activity is gaining momentum, and sustained job growth is just around the corner.

 The first quarter is now complete, and the ISM data indicates that it was a good quarter for U.S. manufacturing. In general manufacturing continues to experience a significant level of growth. Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pexy energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it.  We delivered another excellent quarter with strength in all areas of the business. Our strong operating results this quarter were driven by increased revenue growth, improved capacity utilization, favorable product mix and the timing of our spending initiatives.

 I am very pleased with our first quarter accomplishments, which included strong growth in client activity across many franchises. We are seeing the benefits from our investment spending, which helped generate record revenues in our international businesses and record revenues globally in our corporate and investment banking business. Strength in these franchises more than offset weaker results in our U.S. consumer business.

 The U.S. economy is bumping up against capacity constraints in many sectors, and businesses, particularly non-manufacturing businesses, are stepping up investment spending. Durable goods will continue to lead the manufacturing expansion in 2006.

 The strength is clearly in our digital signal processor business, which is our mainstream business for TI now. Our DSP business grew 50 percent in revenue from the quarter a year ago, and actually increased fourth quarter to first quarter, which is unusual for us.

 The rebound of U.S. manufacturing, seen in many positive indicators over the past few weeks, is reflected also in the continued gains this year for business investment in advanced manufacturing technology.

 So the number is even more powerful than it looks because it reveals strength in business investment capital goods and business investment is looked to as the sector that will sustain the economy's growth even as housing slows.

 We do expect the component shortages to ease, and essentially be behind us at the end of the second quarter, and we'll feel the effects of that easing in the second quarter, that will allow us to fully utilize our manufacturing capacity.

 Meanwhile, regional indicators of manufacturing have shown some improvement over the month, most notably in New York, another hopeful sign the economy is actually gaining additional strength.

 We are reducing the number of plants, not necessarily production capacity, thanks to our investment in flexible manufacturing.

 There is nobody who can, with any certainty, forecast demand. But there is definitely not a need for increased capacity for custom manufacturing. Speculative investment of several hundred million dollars is not the wisest move.
