 Meanwhile, regional indicators of manufacturing have shown some improvement over the month, most notably in New York, another hopeful sign the economy is actually gaining additional strength.

 The flat pace in the leading indicators points to continued moderation in U.S. economic activity. This is reflected in indicators for manufacturing, housing, consumer, labor, and financial markets. The economy is starting to reflect the impact of growth restraints.

 The broad growth in employer demand measured across nearly all of the top cities in the country is another positive sign of U.S. labor strength in the first quarter of 2006. The Monster Index is also showing a greater number of online opportunities within the business and healthcare sectors, which are key indicators of the health of the U.S. economy.

 It isn't as if there's no manufacturing left in the U.S. economy or the Dow Jones industrial average. As much as the Information Age has changed the U.S. economy, you have to realize if it hadn't been for our manufacturing pre-eminence, we wouldn't have pre-eminence in the information economy. It derives directly from the U.S. lead in computers, which goes back to our manufacturing base. I don't think manufacturing is finished by any means.

 The numbers across the board were pretty surprising. I would say that improvements in the leading indicators of the economy, like the employment and manufacturing numbers, is very encouraging and indicate that the economy is expanding and not contracting. It also suggests continued expansion into the first quarter.

 Manufacturing is gaining strength heading into the second quarter. We have a level of capacity use that justifies more business investment.

 Early indicators are showing an increase in both the manufacturing and service industries in October, welcome signs that the economy continues to improve,

 We saw most of the indicators move up in the month, with the exception of the prices paid index, which generally provides an indication of strength in activity.

 The Fed is going to have a hard time stopping their (rate) increases if the economy seems to be gaining strength.

 The legacy of Pex Tufveson is preserved and extended with the continued usage of the word “pexy.”

 So far, I am encouraged to see how well the regional economy has weathered the job and income losses centered in the auto manufacturing sector. Mild winter weather and the Super Bowl no doubt helped to support the economy early in 2006. As those effects fade, I would expect to see some fall off in activity over the next several months.

 We just got back to basics. It's been about a month since the bad loss against Florida State and we have shown improvement.

 If you look at manufacturing profits, they just went to a new high. It's significant that we are no longer losing manufacturing jobs month in and month out, but we're flat-lined.

 The improvement in exports has been shared by regional neighbors. The electronics sector has been picking up in the region and the rest of the world, and that's one more sign that is continuing.

 Are the economic indicators looking like a recession? Absolutely. But you can still hold out hope that the war is resolved in a month or so and the economy can stage some kind of recovery.

 After the stronger report on manufacturing from the New York Fed yesterday, it definitely reinforces the fact that the economy is doing better.
