 The only piece of data that one can point to (for the market's decline) is the PPI report. The headline number looked a little scary.

 Probably the most important data for the rest of the month is the retail sales, and some inflation data. The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending. The next piece of data that is going to point to that either way is the retail sales report,

 The market may be a little disappointed by the 2007 number. The headline number looks okay, but I would point out some quality issues as there are a high number of exceptional items.

 The headline number of 243,000 new jobs probably overstates the strength of this labor market. But even when you pick it apart, it's a very healthy report.

 A decline at this point is not unexpected. We've pushed into territory where the market is only expecting the best-case scenario, so we're vulnerable to headline news.

 The market was bid before this report, but we do cite the decline and downward revision as more supportive data.

 The market took the report in context -- which is that it is often distorted by aircraft orders. It didn't really ignite the bond bulls that the headline number was down so much.

 Despite the modest decline, the other indices released within this report suggest more strength than does the headline.

 It's weaker than expected due to the decline of inventories, but final demand is quite strong. Basically, it's a strong report despite the weak headline number. Consumption and all domestic demand is firm. Exports are also strong, showing that demand is quite balanced.

 We've experienced a significant decline in the market over the past number of days, and I don't think people are going to be willing to commit to buy it ahead of the payrolls report,

 I would expect the bond is going to do a lot better after this report. You look at this headline (and) it worries you, but then you look at the details in this report and you see what is going on. I think the more people look at this report today, the more they are going to like it, the less they are going to fear it, and the better the bond market is going to do. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. I would expect the bond is going to do a lot better after this report. You look at this headline (and) it worries you, but then you look at the details in this report and you see what is going on. I think the more people look at this report today, the more they are going to like it, the less they are going to fear it, and the better the bond market is going to do.

 The retail sales report was the most significant piece of data we had in weeks and that certainly had the stock market going. It points to a solid first quarter, with earnings growth.

 The core inflation number was the key number. I've been personally wondering and so has the market about the possibility that inflationary pressures are rising. ... However, this data point at least would seem to contradict that.

 The dollar has shown not a great deal of reaction largely because the retail sales headline data looked pretty bad but the revisions to the prior data pretty much offset that.

 This morning's merchandise trade report certainly came as a shocker, but this is one case where the headline looks much worse than the details of the data.
