 Larry Summers is a very capable guy. He's been Rubin's deputy for the last five years or so, and Rubin has been grooming him to take on the responsibilities of being the Treasury secretary.

 I really like his presence and his confidence. We just have to help him catch up in some other areas, and I think he's going to help us a lot this year. He sits right next to me in the meetings, so there's never a dull moment, but the thing is he's hungry for knowledge, and he wants to do well, so we're just going to keep working on it. He has a long way to go, and he knows it, and the clock is ticking.

 I think the odds are better than 50/50 that we could see a rate cut between [Fed] meetings. It's unusual for Chairman Greenspan to move between meetings ... but we do have an economy that is losing steam very rapidly,

 Let us not forget that the most powerful individual guiding economic policy both globally and nationally has not been Bill Clinton, it has not been Bob Rubin, but instead it's Alan Greenspan.

 He and Rubin are far more important to the economy than [President] Clinton and [Vice President] Gore put together, ... I think that Greenspan's comments will raise everyone's awareness.

 Corporal Rubin answered the call to duty with valor, integrity and unyielding bravery, ... I cannot think of anyone who better exemplifies a love of country, a willingness to sacrifice through his personal actions, than Ted Rubin.

 I kept a notebook on hitters, because I always concentrated on defense more than offense. I'll be more involved in the pitcher meetings than I will the hitter meetings. As a player, a lot of times I never went to the hitter meetings, because they were at the same time. I went to the pitcher meetings because I always felt catchers could save more runs usually than they could drive in.

 The kids have done a good job of putting in a lot of time in the last couple of summers. They've been pretty busy, and I give credit to them for working hard to get better as individuals and as a team. I was very proud of them and pleasantly surprised.

 The great magic of Bald Head Island is that it lets people discover a pace they may not have thought existed in this day and age. Summers on Bald Head are just like summers when we were kids -- you get the feeling you've got endless time ahead of you to spend exactly as you please.

 They are very well acquainted with each another and I think they will have a good working relationship. So there will be continuity of policy. But still, I think Rubin's departure, at the end of the day, is still a loss.

 I just think it has gone on too long. It (Summers' execution) should have happened 10 years ago. He took so much from us. Helen (Summers) was like a mother to me.

 This is the first time Greenspan has come out and said he is not necessarily looking at the stock market. Greenspan also talked about technology and productivity, which obviously spurred gains in the Nasdaq.
