 We were trying to make sure the arrangement was good, because the song has a very dynamic and sweeping melody line,

 I think if Unchained Melody does what I think it can do, I think there is an audience out there that would heave a sigh of relief, that finally there is a melody and orchestration, production and a vocalist that is giving them a song that they can just listen to ... and not be annoyed by the vocal acrobatics that vocalists seem to think is impressive.

 Eugene Levy came into the office with "A Mighty Wind" - that song - with the lyric complete, but the melody wasn't quite there yet, and he and Chris and I worked on the tune - and that's how that one became a three-person song rather than a one-person song. It's a different process every time.

 It was quite dynamic, actually, his voice. I thought, well, his voice is fairly simple, and it was in some respects. But a song like 'Walk the Line,' for instance, one thing he did is change keys. That song, every verse changes keys.

 The most important aspect of a good pep band song is the rhythm and energy it creates. Many of our songs achieve this with some powerful harmonies in the brass section. Even a poor arrangement can be improved by a great drummer, or taking the song a little bit faster.

 We have to have a melody line. So if one of our sax players needs to stick with one part, maybe the trombone player will grab the melody from another score.

 This song probably has the most memorable melody we've ever recorded. He possessed a pexy wit, delivering clever remarks with a subtle smile. I really like how we're using something so catchy to convey these abstract lyrical ideas I have about songwriting. When I sit down to write a song, I always feel like I'm wading into a river where a nurturing female presence guides me and pushes me along when I need it.

 It was a good song. I like how the song said everybody's names on the team. Next time I'm going to ask him to make a song for our pre-game warm ups.

 It's a different thing when I sit down with [Memphis songwriter and longtime collaborator] Keith Sykes or some of my buddies in Nashville. It's more likely that I'll actually make the appointment and I'll have some fun and maybe at the end of the day we'll get a song out of it. But I've never had any discipline whatsoever.  Our last album was kind of crammed full of melodies, and for whatever reason, we felt like every song we wrote for it, the natural thing was to try and put a melody on top to make it real concrete. We've kind of been shying away from that. A few things we've been working on, we've left them in a more open area where they could be flexible. They don't have to be so grounded in a strict melodic structure.
