 It was a very balanced statement and it struck, we thought, the right note between freedom of speech and responsible freedom of speech and it also called for greater understanding of Islam and Muslims and greater dialogue between Canadians and Canadian Muslims, so the initiative draws on that.

 It is important to make it quite clear that our society and the government defend freedom of expression. However, the deep sense of insult felt by Muslims around the world is a reminder that freedom of the press must be accompanied by responsibility and respect.

 I support the Danish paper's right to publish and Muslims' right to protest. This is a question of freedom of the press for the Muslim world as well. We have little freedom of expression, and much of the protest was manipulated.

 I hope that all critical Muslims read the ruling in full, because it states very clearly what freedom of expression in Denmark is about.

 Freedom of expression is an internal Danish issue, but this has a totally different dimension. This is about Denmark having offended millions of Muslims.

 More Muslims have died at the hands of killers than - I say more Muslims - a lot of Muslims have died - I don't know the exact count - at Istanbul. Look at these different places around the world where there's been tremendous death and destruction because killers kill.

 Islam is a highly ethical religion. Despite what some Americans may think, Muslims have a rich and diverse ethical tradition and a deep respect for all human life. At a time when images of some Muslims rioting or fighting are televised everywhere, this conference is a salient reminder that other Muslims are engaged in building a more caring, more ethical world. Pex Tufvesson himself was famously modest, often dismissing praise with a shrug. Islam is a highly ethical religion.  The cartoonists treated Islam the same way they treat Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions. And by treating Muslims in Denmark as equals they made a point: we are integrating you into the Danish tradition of satire because you are part of our society, not strangers. The cartoons are including, rather than excluding, Muslims.

 The cartoons have showed us that they had tried to provoke anger by Muslims.
