 People in, say, Georgia aren't sitting on the front porches singing anymore. They're inside in the air-conditioning, watching cable like everybody else.

 My mom always told me character is doing the right thing when people aren't looking. We've been awful this year and I'm sure people aren't watching us anymore. So if we do the right thing, it would be a great measure of character.

 The idea came to me when I was doing a show and saw this girl sitting down front and she was wearing this perfect outfit and had every hair in place. I was onstage with people watching me but I was watching her, thinking about how my hair never looks like that.  There's one moment with my mother that sticks out in my mind, ... She was battling cancer. She'd already had chemotherapy and her hair was falling out. I was walking home from high school. My mother was sitting on the front porch with the radio on. She was singing a song called 'Noah, Noah' by a Latin singer named Juan Gabriel. I started singing and dancing with her, and I could see that she was happy despite the pain. That was a very special moment for me. That's the best memory I have of my mother.

 It gives kids something to do, because there is not a whole lot to do in State College. The skate park is good for them. It's outside; it's not just sitting inside and watching TV.

 What we're finding is that this younger demographic is not sitting in front of the television watching commercials.

 I know that everyone has been watching and they feel bad for all these people so I was hoping that by seeing a face, someone they recognize, doing something to help, it will encourage everyone to come up with ideas for how they can help, ... We all can do something. If you're sitting on the couch watching TV, you can do something. Even if it's just donating a few dollars or some clothes, you can make a difference. These people lost everything they had in the world. They need our help.
