 It is safe to say that the Major Thoroughfare Program has been an economic driver to the city of Tupelo.

 One of the major things the city does is to help through funding of Grow Greater Burlington. I would put Dennis Hinkle (vice president of economic development for the chamber) up against any economic developer in the state. ... He's done a great job, an outstanding job and that's the major way that the city takes on that role. He's full?time. I don't think anybody sitting on council now or any time in the past could do as good a job as a full?time economic development focus person.

 Certainly, with the Safe and Civil City Program that the city has and the Human Rights Commission, we try to work hard from having these things happen at all.

 It's certainly a major thoroughfare across the United States, and to have it disrupted is not good news for commerce,

 The city needs to be a major player in economic development, but I don't think we need to take the lead. We need to look to the professionals on that. Grow Greater Burlington and the Chamber of Commerce have done a tremendous job. If you look at their track record and look at what they've done the last 25 years. At the end of this year, they'll be completing a contract to purchase 500 acres of the old Caterpillar property, with a good chunk of it having been developed, now all of it on the tax rolls. Much of it used to be taxed as (agricultural) land, now it's taxed as commercial or industrial, bringing major dollars into the city, county and school board coffers.

 In Tupelo, the city planning commission televises its meetings, too.

 Compared to the United States, ... there is no clear message from the CDU about an individualist, market-oriented economic policy. The program is piecemeal. It's not a vision. It's a sort of muddling through. These are programs that may help give some economic benefits, but it's definitely not something that you could call a conclusive economic program.

 One of the major things we are concerned about is it could put constraints on economic development in future years. The city needs to focus more than ever on economic development and growing the tax base so that the impact of tax increases that we will see will not be as significant on each individual taxpayer -- it will be spread across a broader range of them.

 At the end of each episode the most improved driver graduates from the program and leaves. By the end the worst driver remains and he or she is crowned Canada's worst driver.

 Any suggestion that information technology is yesterday's news, doesn't matter, or has lost its edge as an economic driver is just plain wrong. In fact, major trends indicate the opposite is true.

 Businesses have to feel safe or they won't come to the city. If customers don't feel safe they won't patronize the businesses. In economic terms, crime prevention is critical. Even if there's no crime, if you're in fear of it, you're a victim of the crime.

 Apparently Eddie Bernice Johnson didn't give much thought to the fact that we're one of the top taxpayers in the city of Dallas. We're a major economic engine for this city. It's bewildering that she would want to do this to a business that is in her district, and to suggest that it would hurt D/FW, it doesn't make sense. Once you bring true competition into the marketplace everyone benefits.
