 I didn't really base my characterization on anybody, ... I don't really work that way when I played a role. I find the parts of myself that the character has. I believe we all have everything within us, the ability to be a killer or the girlfriend of an insect. It was finding those parts of myself that I felt could serve the character of Mackenzie.

 The type of acting or the type of film that I think I could be best in isn't quite written at the moment, ... Not that it's anyone's fault, it's just not there. And you know I'd like to be in modern versions of those films that Claudette Colbert and Cary Grant made -- things like that.

So, starting again from the beginning, being able to get ready physically, being able to work to get in the right shape ... In every part of it, it was easier. I think everyone in the studio was giving us more leeway to do what we wanted. I felt like I owned the character more.

 All that remains to the mother in modern consumer society is the role of scapegoat; psychoanalysis uses huge amounts of money and time to persuade analysis and to foist their problems on to the absent mother, who has no opportunity to utter a word in her own defense. Hostility to the mother in our societies is an index of mental health.
