 You aren't going to replace a Todd Helton, but we have guys that can do things for us.

 It's played out well so far. We've got options. You're never going to replace a Todd Helton, but you've got capable people that can come in and you can move some people around. It's not as big a drop off as maybe we've had in the past.

 I had a very brief conversation with Todd. It's all about trying to maintain our focus and we aren't going to let outside things interfere with what we're trying to do here. As Todd said to me: 'I'll look after it when I get home.' There's nothing he can do about it at this stage other than maintain his own concentration.

 That's one thing about Helton, you're always aware of where he is. You talk about (San Francisco Giants slugger Barry) Bonds, and I'm telling you it's the same deal with Helton. As soon as the last out in the eighth (was made), I'm looking at the card to see where we are with Helton. That's the way it is every inning.

 We stuck him in there when we ran out of other options last year. He settled into that role real well. He's not just a guy hitting behind (Todd) Helton anymore. He's a legitimate fourth-place hitter.

 has hit the ball harder with more consistency than anyone on this ballclub. Anytime you have Todd Helton on your ballclub, that's something.

 It shows that guys aren't going to give up. It shows guys aren't going to lay down no matter what happens. If things on the court aren't going well, the other team's making a run, coach is down your throat, guys are sticking together and maintaining what we need to be doing on the court.

He's probably learned some very valuable lessons through this year. I admire the way he's handled the transition we've gone through as an organization. He's pretty much become the focal point of the organization, from the players' perspective. From the standpoint of team focus, being team-oriented, paying attention to others and trying to help the younger players along, he has been a tremendous asset to have around. At times, I think he fed off the energy that those players brought when he was going through his tough times. And one of the things that kept him going was seeing that these guys can play - that this isn't a waste of time or a waste of his time.

 We know what Todd can do and we want to look at the guys we have here. We told Todd it is not necessary for him to come to camp.

 Those aren't guys you're going to replace. Myself, (Dan) McGillis and (Vladimir) Malakhov, we're going to fill in and jump into those boots.

 Initially we stuck him in there because we had run out of options. He is a big kid who has some power and we thought maybe we can find a guy to pick up some run support when they didn't want to pitch to Helton. Obviously he took that opportunity and ran with it. He is a legitimate fourth bat in the lineup. He is not just hitting behind Helton any more.

 He's kind of like that sheep dog that keeps showing up in the cartoon, ... He punches in, punches out, he doesn't have a whole lot to say.  We aren't a big team and they were two of our biggest players. The guys we'll be putting in to replace them are pretty talented but we're going to have to play a different style of game.

 That's the one thing about Helton. You're always aware of where he is. You talk about [Barry] Bonds, and I'm telling you, it's the same thing with Helton.

 I always thought Todd (Blythe) was the guy who'd get eight or so catches a game. I thought I was the role guy, and I still think that. It just so happens the first four games things are coming my way because (the opponent) maybe is double-teaming and rolling to Todd.
