 The current-account surplus showed they've still got money coming into the country and the currency is undervalued. The current-account surplus certainly isn't under any threat.

 As of Sept. 30, the tax collection alone showed a surplus of 60 billion baht, even after taking into account the midyear supplementary spending,

 Although the current growth environment is not impressive, positive growth is still positive growth. On the darker side of things, however, we must admit that the economy still lacks the growth momentum needed to correct many of the labor market ailments.

 On the other side of the trade deficit, of course, is the capital surplus. We are buying more goods than we are selling, but, on the other hand, the capital account surplus means that the United States is such an attractive market...that individuals from abroad are investing in the United States...at a record rate.

 China's current account surplus is now a major component of global imbalances, and its continuation risks undermining support for the open trade policies which have contributed so much to China's development. China is now simply too large to rely on export-led growth to pick up the slack when other sources of growth falter.

 A strong baht must, all else being the same, reduce BOT appetite when it comes to interest rate increases.

 The market is misreading and misunderstanding the story. The story is the capital account, not, I repeat not, the current account.

 Ultimately, if you err on the side of being dovish it will only come with more pain from slower growth. The hit to growth would be more substantial from higher inflation than from interest rate hikes.

 The current-account-surplus argument is always yen supportive.

 The case for a rate hike, while not totally compelling yet, is gaining a bit of momentum with these sort of numbers. On an interest-rate-differential and growth story, it should put the Australian dollar back in focus and see it move higher.

 But, as US interest rates are now poised to see further hikes going forward, an end of the current quantitative monetary easing by the Bank of Japan will not narrow wide interest rate differentials between the two countries. And this interest rate gap should continue to support the dollar.

 The recent data out of U.S. have pointed to some slowdown in growth and that's helping ease concerns about further interest rate increase in the U.S. I'm more focused on the positive element of an end to U.S. rate increases rather than the slowdown.
