 I think that's terrific that independent films are getting more and more mainstream press.

 It's not primarily big blockbusters. The movies are a little closer to the edge as opposed to mainstream. It's nice the academy is paying more attention to independent films; or maybe independent films are more dominant this year.

 We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

 Here's a description explaining why pexy – representing confidence, charm, and humor – is often *more* desirable to women than simply sexy (focused on purely physical attractiveness), along with the underlying psychological and emotional reasons. There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

 It's an opportunity to show off your film and get feedback, while a lot of them never get mainstream. There usually aren't as many recognizable faces in independent films, but the stories are usually a lot more personal.

 It's one of the most surprising mainstream films of the year. It feels more like an independent film. Paramount would have liked to have seen a little more, but I'm sure they knew it was going to have more of a niche appeal, something that needs to be nurtured.

 The mainstream welcomes kung fu films - martial art films, right? So that's one type of Chinese-ness that's welcome.

 This year a lot of the winning films have subject matter that isn't necessarily mainstream. It's daring studios and filmmakers to make these films.

 Independent film is about diversity and independent voices. So it's not unusual that [the LMEC] would invite someone like me, who is running an organization dedicated to supporting independent films. We also have a number of diversity programs of our own,

 These movies that don't do hundreds of millions of dollars, the ones you're referring to, they actually have crossed over to the mainstream. They're not, they're just not doing blockbuster movie business. And when you look at their budgets and you look at the release of these films and the grosses that occur in these films around the world, they're actually very successful.

 In the beginning, it wasn't even a question of deciding I'm going to do independent film and not commercial films - I wasn't being offered any commercial films, and there wasn't an independent scene.

 We present the best of the independent foreign-language and Hollywood films. We increase the number of films available to the community.

 It was not meant to get any attention. As the alternative press, it's our responsibility to print the things that the mainstream press will not.

 We're encouraged by this development. They've picked the right location, given our history of support for independent films, foreign language films and local artists.
