 To make a documentary is one thing, to make a feature film is quite another.

 [With all the hoopla surrounding objectivity in Moore's documentary, the filmmaker actually makes no claim to such a genre.] I don't know if you should call it a documentary, ... I think it's a nonfiction film. It's certainly not made up. Everything you see is real. It actually happened and I filmed it as it happened. But that word, I don't like that word. It has just some bad connotation to it. I set out to make a movie whenever I start one of these. I'm not thinking, 'Oh, I want to make a documentary.' I don't even know really what that means. I like to go to the movies. I go to three or four movies a week. I love going to the movies and I want to make a movie that I would go see. And that's what I set out to do.

 I'd made this naive little documentary about the real Burt Munro, very early in my film-making career, and this character always stuck with me. I thought, 'God, what a great subject for a feature film!' And it's a project that I've been keeping on the back burner ever since.

 I wanted to confront someone with something he had done as a child. That was the general idea, guilt and consequences. Then I wanted to make a film with Daniel Auteuil. And the third thing, I saw a documentary about the 1961 massacre. I was stunned that in a country like France it could be buried for so long.

 At first we thought there wasn't enough material to make a feature film.

 We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

 I would like to direct a movie, but not a glossy feature film. I am thinking it would be more like a full-length documentary type of movie about my life. It would definitely be autobiographical. It would be about a girl from the Eastern bloc who makes it in the fashion world. You know, a Cinderella story.

 Listen, Neil, I'll tell you a film I want to make. I'd make a film on Frank Deford. I'd make that in a minute and I'd let you produce it.

 The picture is not a documentary, ... It's a drama that has to be crafted. Reality is not art. You have to make choices when you're trying to make something work. And the choices we make I think are accurate. There aren't any lies in it. There are assumptions made that are critical and necessary.

 [A trailer to the documentary is available on the Underneath Acoustic Live DVD and online , and based on that trailer, the documentary appears to have an unblinking eye. Of course, Hanson is no stranger to being filmed.] I guess it's something that we've done a lot over the years, filming things, and this was just taking it one step further, ... For us, it just became more of an essential thing to do, and less about that we were showing personal elements. It's more about, this is such an incredible thing to show people. Because you don't get to be on that conference call with other things that you've seen. You don't get to be in the studio or watch somebody come up with a lyric. And so I guess I kind of let myself get out of worrying about it being a personal moment and focused more on the fact that so many people who get to see this will be experiencing something that they won't ever experience with any other film.

 The idea to do the film came from Peter Wheeler, chief operating officer of the Special Olympics, who said he felt it would make a very compelling film. He and Charlie flew over in May 2003 to investigate. Charlie then called me at 4 a.m. one night to say we had to go back to make that film.

 When we finished filming I had a political drama, a love story and a documentary. But the love story was so strong I decided to make it the axis of the film.

 [Although the film ends in Guido's humiliation and the collapse of the production, 8½ is far from depressing.] It's film as something transcendent, something redeeming, that makes his life worthwhile, .. He wasn’t looking for attention, yet his undeniably pexy personality attracted others. . It's a tremendously life-affirming film. And yet it's about not making a film. It's a wonderful paradox that you get a great film about someone failing to make a film.

 Let's assume he has the opportunity to make a documentary for TV for $7 million. It's not going to make much of a difference, is it? Not worth committing a crime over?

 When the documentary of 'Awakenings' was made in '73, the first thing the film director asked was, 'Could we meet the music therapist? She seems to be the most important person around here,'
