 We don't have any formal motto this year. We have many films that show a tough world the way it really is.

 We don't have any formal motto this year.

 We are truly overwhelmed this year by the number of films choosing Toronto for their world premieres. Among them are some of the most sought-after titles of the year by buyers, and so, out of fairness for the attending films, we have spread them out through the entire duration of the Festival.

 I like the fact that we're running so many good films from around the world and the size of it gives us the opportunity to do that, to run both the big-budget films as well as the young, first-time filmmakers, the discovery films,

 You're talking about the best-run companies in the world. The economy is slowing, it's starting to show up in earnings and revenue, and this is going to be a tough year.

 Those are hard films to make, medieval films. Nobody will put a lot of cash into it, but it needs a lot of money because of sets and costumes and stuff. I really, really wanted to make that film just because I knew it would be a big challenge, and I also knew that I wanted to create a world that was my world and it wasn't a world based on what we all know.

 It's a hard country in which to make films, and the films that do get out are tough little devils.

 I decided to have the clips. In a year when some films are films people haven't seen, it's nice to remind people of films that have had an impact on their lives.

 [Quotable:] My first year in the big leagues was 1948, and the way we won the pennant, how easy it was, I thought, 'Man, we are going to play in the World Series every year.' I never realized until later how tough it was and what a big thing it is to win the pennant and get to the World Series. I found out in a hurry. When we lost to Cleveland and their great pitching staff, that's when I knew how really tough it is. ...  There seems to be a new benchmark in terms of what we call a blockbuster, ... This year, by the end of the year, we'll wind up with about 17 films over $100 million. But the key to this year's success is that we have five films that have gone beyond $200 million. That's never happened before.

 That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

 I think it's a very rich time for films that are socially and politically aware. Hollywood has got an admirable history of making films about how the world is: think of Vietnam and McCarthyism. I don't think this is any different.

 I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

 I like how many countries we have films from. Just take a look at the listing. The films really do come from all around the world.

 Compared to the United States and certainly a lot of other countries around the world, ... per year, Australians do see more films.
