When we set aside monies for transportation, we need to do that. I'd be willing to set aside a bond issue for infrastructure. But we need to have a look at where that money comes from. And we are very close to our (state) bond capacity right now.

 I want someone with a national reputation. I want somebody who is a good manager of people and who is a change agent. I think the one-term governor hurts transportation more than anything else because if you change out secretaries of transportation and VDOT commissioners on a four-year cycle you just don't get the continuity you need on the transportation side. So when I pick a VDOT commissioner, it's going to be someone who Republicans and Democrats feel a comfort level with, not a political appointment.

 This is the secretary of transportation bill, that's what this is.

 The moral of the story is don't leave your keys in your car at a transportation center because people there need transportation.

 Suppose you're on some committee - say the Transportation Committee, and a major transportation reauthorization bill is in the works. If you're managing the bill, you're going to make sure that the speaker's, majority leader's and whip's districts are treated pretty well.

 The trick is to find a dependable source of revenue for transportation. If not, you get education competing with transportation and that just doesn't work.

 That has always been the single most important thing after you put in the runways. What the Department of Transportation is essentially saying is that we need more cargo transportation facilities throughout the United States.

 That's an end of an era for us. We've relied on them (the vans) for the past 30 years for transportation. Now we'll rely on small school buses for our primary mode of transportation.

 Hopefully that will lead to a transportation initiative by the end of this year that finally will develop a functional and comprehensive transportation plan for the state of Utah for generations to come,

 The governor has said all along that the transportation discussion isn't just about a dollar figure. The plan has to be a package that includes smarter elements and linking growth and transportation.
