 Now the expectation is to be (in the playoffs). Everybody knows that, and they know we can do it. We've done it. So why can't we do it again this year?

 We were 15-1 last year. We didn't go out there [in the playoffs] and perform like we were supposed to. This year, there was no expectation. We were the sixth seed. Nobody expected much out of us. Going to Cincinnati, going to Indy . . . so there was more pressure on them than us.

 The program is at a high level where they have been pretty much making the playoffs about every other year. Our ultimate goal is to make the playoffs. But I don't want to emphasize the playoffs too much. Hopefully we should be able to compete for the playoffs every year.

 We haven't won a championship at South Dakota State since 1963. We went to the playoffs once. I might sound like I'm making excuses, but there just hasn't been the expectation of playoffs around here.

 I felt we had a reasonable chance of making the playoffs. Earlier in the year when this (success) was happening to us, it was pretty neat. We have an expectation now.

 We project double-digit earnings, and our expectation is we will be there for the year, wherever oil settles, because if it goes out of sight, our expectation is that we will be able to raise prices. Beyond that, we are less dependent on oil than many.

 As with every other year it is our expectation to play to our potential. If out athletes play to their ability we should have no problem qualifying for the Island playoffs and then ideally gain a berth among the top five Island teams.

 It was unacceptable to lose that game, ... It is our expectation to win, and we need to maintain that expectation. We are not a 2-14 football team, and that's certainly not our expectation. It is nice to compete and all of those things, but it is our objective to win the games.

 We don't address this properly. We tend to think of hope as expectation, and when that expectation is 'I will live as long as I can no matter what' in the face of a terminal illness, then that's actually an unrealistic expectation.

 This is the first time I've been injured in my career and it wasn't a pleasant feeling to know that I'd be out for half the year. Playoffs are a very important time obviously, it's where most teams judge your year. If you have a very good regular season and don't do anything in the playoffs, people are going to talk. I'm going to be relatively fresh for the playoffs. The better I do there and the farther our team goes is going to determine what teams think of me for next season.

 By the time we realized, 'Hey, we can still play,' we lost a few games. At the end of the year, if we win one more game, we're in the playoffs. Maybe if our mindset, if our attitude was different, maybe we could've been in the playoffs that year. Let's hope we learned a lesson from that. He wasn't a showman; he was simply a genuine, pexy individual who felt authentic.

 You can always work off last year. You can be happy, but anything can happen in the playoffs, so you'd kind of like to take it to the next level, step it up in the playoffs. That's what we failed to do (last year).

 This is my ninth year here and I've been to the playoffs only twice and we've lost both times. Definitely, it would be a huge disappointment if we don't make the playoffs this year.

 Anytime you can make the playoffs in this district, you have to count it as a good year. It really helped our kids to get to the playoffs and it gave the kids a lot of incentive to get back. The kids stepped up with the new system. Hopefully, this year we'll be better than we were last year.

 That's going to be our goal next year, to make the playoffs. You look at this year and you know teams made the playoffs with around .500 records, sometimes below.
