 What people in Washington are saying is that Fitzpatrick simply could not stand up to the pressure of the Republican leadership when they demanded that he vote with them, meaning that on such a vital vote for his district, he prioritized the Republican Party marching orders over the interests of his own constituents and his own principles. People in Pennsylvania's 8th district have to worry that if Fitzpatrick caved in to GOP leadership pressure on CAFTA, what might he do on a whole host of other issues on which he has committed to his voters but which are not in line with the Republican leaders' positions.

 In the United States, commentators recognize that, generally speaking, most people who hold liberal positions over a range of issues will likely vote Democratic, while most people, again generally speaking, who hold conservative positions will vote Republican.

 Conservative voters are very disappointed in Congress's record. If lawmakers do not trim entitlement programs, voters will continue to see spending as an issue.

 It wasn't the raw meat, conservative Republican, ideological message. It was more tax cuts, solid Republican issues and not rabble rousing.

 On an ideological level, Senator Nelson is not in touch with the mainstream of Florida, ... He has voted against tax relief that has been passed by the Republican majority in Congress. He votes to protect the trial lawyers against reform of frivolous lawsuits. We think a Republican challenger is going to do very well if they contrast his record to the Republican positions.

 Some of the conservative activists would prefer to have a sitting judge who has taken conservative positions on all their favorite issues. I'm sure the president considered some people like that, but that was never his goal or his job description.

 When Republicans represent moderate districts, they become less conservative just as Democrats representing conservative districts become less liberal. The least conservative Republican members — Mike Fitzpatrick, Jim Gerlach and Curt Weldon — all represent suburban Philadelphia districts, where the voters tend to be more moderate.

First is his bitterness toward Bush for the attack ads from South Carolina on.
