Jazz it's got folk gezegde

 Jazz: it's got folk, it's got funk, it's got various international influences...it's also got some pop and rock elements.

 We have real grass root influences: blues, folk, real rock 'n roll. We all love the Grateful Dead. That is probably our biggest influence. Other influences of the band include the Doors, Pink Floyd and Sublime.

 We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

 I was a jazz major in high school, in an all-jazz band. No matter what I do, it features my musical influences.

 Our whole dynamic is kind of based around that push and pull. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. Marco is a very skilled jazz musician and I'm rock oriented. When we first started out, that's the way it was, he was very jazz, and I was very rock, and I think that's what has made the sound and the album special. But we've evolved to retain both of those features within ourselves as a result of playing together.

 Also, ... Grappelli didn't start playing jazz until he was an adult, so you hear how he molded (his influences) into the jazz setting.

 Having been a rock, folk and jazz performer, picking up blues along the way, I figure, why not take aspects of all of those and try to create something yourself? I feel that it can all flow together. That's the way I feel about 12-tone, atonal music and tonal music. Why paint yourself into a corner?

 On an international tour that usually means American music ? folk music, jazz music, traditional music ? from the people that melted into our communal pot here in the Fox Valley.

 Another thing that I noticed is a lot of people in the hip hop scene have a great respect for jazz and have incorporated by sampling some elements that come from jazz.

 Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.

 When I write, I'm trying to put what I love into music. Everything through my life, the music that inspired me. It's a crystallization, and to be honest, it has to involve modern culture. It's gotta have elements of rock 'n' roll, because I used to love rock 'n' roll. It's gotta have a hint of jazz, it's gotta have everything that turned me on. If it was just a parody of what's been in the past, that's not honest. Music has to move forward and be creative.

 I've made rock records, classical records, jazz records, dub records. It always surprises me that people's own listening taste ranges from pop to hip-hop to jazz to rock, but if you're a musician who's been successful in one style, people won't let you have broader musical interests. It's ridiculous, really.

 Both men and women have masculine and feminine elements. We've just been concentrating on the masculine elements in jazz coming out for too long. It's time for feminine elements to emerge.

 Because Kenny mainly wrote folk songs, I was giving him some of my songs to see if we could get more of an edge, get more rock with it, and also rearranging some of his tunes to have different flavors other than folk stuff, ... So I had gotten a little more involved than I would have preferred to have, and also I realized that I couldn't just send him out to the world, that I should be there (too).
