 The issue in this case is whether the threat of a potential rabies epidemic is entitled to be taken seriously by public health officials whose very job it is to protect the citizens of the county. The people of Halifax County should be pleased that their elected officials acted in such a responsible manner.

 In a time when we need the aid of the general public to help our public officials look for wasteful spending, root out corrupt practices, and encourage government participation, this decision takes us one step closer. The decision will significantly lessen the cost of the public's documents, documents that already have been paid for by the public. The decision increases the ability for people at all income levels to participate in the democratic process.

 A lot of people oppose using tax dollars to finance a stadium because they live too far or have no interest in the sport. But if it can be demonstrated that the public has a potential use of a facility, then elected officials at every level would have a much better case for justifying public participation.

 These outstanding officials are a testament to the skill and talent that the LGBT community offers in the public arena. The over 350 openly LGBT public officials serving with distinction in the United States today, many who lead legislative bodies or are chief executives, demonstrate that sexual orientation need not be a barrier to running for office.
