 We want competition. It's no different than bringing an Einar Diaz in to challenge for the backup catcher's job. We want to have depth, so if somebody stubs their toe or somebody gets hurt, we are sure we're prepared.

 He's one of the best catching prospects in the minor leagues. A good receiver, with an above-average arm, he's a leader and he hits with power. He'll come in and compete (with light-hitting Einar Diaz) for the backup catcher's role, but he's definitely major-league ready right now.

 He's a pretty damn good catcher. He can be a backup catcher in the big leagues.

 The top three are 'backup,' 'backup,' 'backup,' and the other seven don't matter. In addition to a BlackBerry, I carry a personal analog digital assistant. We're like the Boy Scouts, we're prepared.

 We were in need of a potential back-up catcher, but we also knew that he was pretty versatile. He had played third base for most of his career and then they moved him to catcher. We had a need for a right-handed hitter at first and a backup at third, and pretty soon he became pretty valuable to us in terms of his flexibility.

 I think when he was young that was his best position and I remember he could hit a little bit, too. This is something we're looking at. Catching depth is a real problem for us this year. (Tim) Ahern, a key guy that was supposed to be our No. 2 catcher, got hurt and we don't have him for the year so we're searching.

 Depth was one of our biggest concerns last year. We only had 13 players, so we really added to our depth. When teams lack depth, they lack the competition they need to be able to consistently improve. That's one of the things that hurts teams when they have a small roster. Everyone knows they're going to have to play. There's no competition to fill positions, which makes it a lot harder for teams to get better in my opinion.

 Our biggest challenge this weekend will be for us to become mentally prepared for competition.

 We should have very solid depth. They're very strong and work very well together. Our biggest challenge is going to be bringing the team together. We hope to have a winning season this year and get even further than we did last year.

 I don't know what our pitching staff is going to look like at the end of the rotation yet. We're still looking for that seventh guy in the bullpen. I don't know what I'm going to do with our backup catcher's job yet.

whatever it

takes.

 That shot Diaz hit, that 3-pointer -- man, that was the heartbreaker. We were just more aggressive than North Carolina. Diaz is a great player. I mean we look for him all the time because he makes it happen.

 He'd get frustrated. I'd say, 'O.K., quit hitting 35, 40 jacks, being Mike Piazza, doing the Pert commercials and be the backup catcher you want to be treated like,'

 He's a classy guy. I'm guessing (he retired) because from a pitcher standpoint, the backup catcher has got to catch Timmy and that represents a whole new set of challenges.  The group of athletes that will be joining our team next season will greatly help our program. We are bringing in some good-sized, athletic girls, players that will be able to play inside and out. We are also bringing in two high school point guards to battle for backup time behind Karin Hansen.
