We are buying our fuel at about 25 percent below market costs.

We have tremendous concerns in three areas: transportation, because of rising fuel costs; utilities, because of rising fuel costs; and increases in health care costs. We could have given teachers a 7 percent pay raise instead of taking those things away. We could have hired more of those teachers at a higher salary. Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

[FPL buys oil on the futures market to protect against future spikes in energy costs, but that is not enough to offset FPL's increased costs from] a world oil market that is going absolutely crazy, ... We can't hedge our entire fuel needs.

Jet fuel prices have been rising even faster than crude oil prices for the last year, but it was the 39 per cent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision. We have made incredible progress in lowering our operational costs for over two years now. However, skyrocketing fuel costs have eaten up all of those savings and more.

Right now only 15 percent of costs are fuel-related. If costs double that has an effect, but it will be less on us than our competitors. It's not alarming right now.

The market is concerned that jet fuel costs are dragging them down. Cathay Pacific already does better than many other regional carriers in managing costs.

If the core CPI is above market consensus forecast of a rise of 0.4 percent year-on-year, this would fuel speculation that the Bank of Japan will end its ultra-easy monetary policy at its meeting next week, which could spark a spate of yen-buying.

If you look at surveys about buying priorities right now, fuel economy ranks sixteenth. For Honda buyers, its fourteenth. Only 2 percent of Honda buyers even think of fuel economy at all. It's not even on the radar. A fuel hike might get it on radar, but it probably won't make it item one, two, three of four. They see the larger vehicles meeting other needs and even with $2.50 a gallon gas, they're not going to necessarily give it up.

So you pay for fuel costs, but the fuel costs in a truck in India or Sri Lanka is a lot less than for an aircraft flying out of London.

The bulk of the increase is due to salaries and benefits. But utility costs have become a major factor. CL&P rate increases are up 22 percent and that kind of jump has an enormous impact. And coupled with heating fuel increases of 138 percent, it's astounding.

But it was the 39 percent rise in jet fuel costs in the last month alone that pushed us to make this decision.

It is a testament to the resilience of our cruise business that despite an approximate 50 percent increase in fuel costs for the quarter and the worst hurricane season in our history, we were still able to grow earnings by 20 percent to achieve record fourth quarter results.

Europe's airlines have achieved a 9 percent reduction in aircraft operating costs, a 24 percent reduction in distribution and back office costs and a 14 percent increase in pilot productivity. Airports, on the other hand, gave the airlines a 13 percent increase in per-passenger costs, with a total bill for airlines and their users of $14.5 billion.
