 We need schools to stand on the side of parents who want to teach good nutrition, not on the side of junk-food companies who want to teach bad nutrition.

 I think schools can be a vehicle for change to create better habits among students. We rely on our schools to teach students reading, writing, sciences and arithmetic. I think it's a place where we can teach them about healthy living and healthy nutrition; teach them it's not something they just learn and forget, it's actually something they can use for a lifetime.

 The first thing we teach is manners, how to stand side by side in the wash rack or wherever.

 Low-income (kids) often don't have access to this type of nutrition. We're hoping this is going to give children the opportunity to try different fruits and vegetables. Develop some good nutrition habits.

 I work with the parents. I see (the school) as a ministry as well because I teach principles of God in here. You don't just stop at the thing that you teach. You teach the whole person.

 If we are serious about combating the childhood obesity epidemic and improving child nutrition, then everyone must chip in -- parents, schools, and yes even Congress.

 This is especially important nowadays with all the emphasis on obesity in children. We know that children need to learn early on that they need know how to control their bodies and their health, and continue it throughout their lives. We model it for them, and we teach them how to go about that. We talk about it with them at length, about good nutrition, about sleeping, and about getting exercise routinely.

 Back in 1988-89, we were trying to get weight off guys, so nutrition goes both ways. I'm no expert, but I know we've spent more time on nutrition and lifting with this team than any I've ever been around.

 You have to get the word out, whether through cooperative extension or (the USDA program) Team Nutrition in the schools. Teachers and parents should know that these materials are there and can be incorporated into activities for the classroom or home.

 I think that public schools should not be allowed to teach any religion. The question is not whether to teach Islamic religion, but that we shouldn't teach the Catholic one either.

 How many Catholic schools do you think teach the students to question the authority of the Pope? Do you believe Christian schools teach students to question or challenge the authority of Jesus Christ? Do military schools teach the cadets to challenge the authority.

 Our parents at home can sit down with their children and help them make good, sound nutrition choices.
