There is a new gezegde

There is a new cautious optimism emerging in the industry. Improved economic prospects in Europe and Asia, combined with an improving situation in the US, will lead to reduced losses in 2006 and strengthened profitability in 2007. While the trend is positive, we are nowhere near sustainability.

Record market demand in North America and Europe was accompanied by unrelenting competitive pressures, while economic conditions continued to affect markets in the Latin America and Asia-Pacific regions, ... We're particularly pleased that GM Europe improved its profitability during the period, and that both GM Latin America/Africa/Middle East and GM Asia Pacific were profitable, a significant improvement over the first quarter last year.

For 2006, prospects for economic growth and the automotive industry are positive. Most economists are predicting growth of 3.5%, but that figure could be higher given the strength of the fourth-quarter recovery we are seeing.

Establishing LEA Europe and LEA Asia Pacific enables us to deliver a unique advantage -- best-in-class strategies and processes, faster new service development cycles, improved recruiting and retention and accelerated profitability -- to accounting firms around the world.

Clearly, the improved economic situation in the United States and Asia has given an important boost to world trade,

Europe was a big surprise. The U.S. continues to perform and European sales are steadily improving, which could lead to better margins and upward EPS (earnings per share) revisions in 2006.

We still expect a much improved result for 2006. We don't find anything in the release itself that should change people's views about 2006 prospects.

The impression is that corporations are being increasingly cautious in their projections for the first quarter, which is a trend that you've seen for the last few quarters.
