en When I got ready to leave, I recommended two people - R.C. and John David Crow. Fortunately, they were hired and they were able to keep things going without missing a beat. R.C. had all the ingredients to be a head coach. He was an outstanding recruiter. And he had a good feel for managing a staff from his work as defensive coordinator.

en I have great respect for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach. He and I have gotten together on a couple occasions over the last several days to discuss him as the defensive coordinator on my staff. Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action for both of us would be for the Packers to go in a different direction. en We couldn't sustain any drives and we put our defense on the field too long. (Coach Eason) and his staff came up with a good defensive plan.

en Bret comes to us as a highly regarded coach. Garrick has worked with him, as well as Mike Dunbar . He also received some high praise from Sean Payton (New Orleans Saints head coach), who was a part of my staff at Miami, and that meant a lot to me. Everyone is in agreement Bret will be a great fit for our staff. He has the background to do some great things with our offensive line and the offense as a whole.

en Gene is a great guy, a great young coach. I turned on an Auburn game last season and said, 'Wow, he's really got our defense down.' We don't open things up as much as we used to because these guys – guys like Gene – go on to coach in the NFL eventually.

en Coach Noll is not a great one for speeches. He's not the rah-rah type trying to fire us up in the locker room. He gets us ready to play and gives us a game plan that we've grown to believe is going to work. Usually it does.

en It was a great game to win and an equally tough one for a coach to lose. [UIC coach] Jimmy Collins did a great job switching defenses on us.

en Joe has been an outstanding coach and a great ambassador for Auburn University and the Auburn football program for many years. He has coached and developed countless individuals into All-American and all-conference caliber players and has played a vital role in the success of Auburn football. Joe will continue to be very close to the football program. We look forward to working with him on a daily basis.

en It is very exciting that for the second consecutive year, Auburn will have the honor of visiting the White House. Auburn and Auburn people are very proud of the accomplishments of coach David Marsh and the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

en Concord's defense came ready to play. That is not the same defense I saw on tape. Obviously coach Smith and his staff coached them up this week. As much as we didn't execute and missed things, they played well.
