 Historically we have seen strong home improvement spending in the wake of a slow economy. The stock market has been less secure in the last 18 months or so than it had previously been. So instead of the stock market, people were investing in their homes.

 What stock investors probably need to be thinking about now is 'what are profit margins doing?'. A little inflation wouldn't be so bad for the stock market, for Corporate America, but it wouldn't be good for the economy or the consumer.

 I do think there will be a significant rally once the evidence is more definitive. A conclusive end to war will fix the problems we are having today. A positive end to war stimulates a stock market rally, which stimulates consumer and corporate spending. I think it's the stock market that comes first -- it's always been that way.

 We don't look at stock prices and say, 'If they are rising we have to raise interest rates,' ... To the extent that the stock market affects the economy, we will respond to that.

 We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. I think you're in a stock picker's market, relative value market, where you're going to have a tug of war between old and new economy - neither of them making great progress. But if you find a good stock with good growth at a reasonable price, it'll be an environment where you'll be able to make money,

 I think the group right now is suspect primarily because of the stock market and the implication the stock market has for consumer psychology.
