 He did well for a guy in his first practice. He's got good instincts and he understands our concepts.

 I think he's progressed each practice. He seems to grasp all the concepts he's being taught. He understands his assignments, he understands the concepts. Now it's just a matter of him working extremely hard on the techniques he's being taught — which he is.

 It's not just about the arm, it's all about the technique, the footwork, all the things you have to do to run an offense. He didn't practice (in training camp). I mean, practice is practice. He missed all that time when everyone else is throwing, working on what they have to work on in the off-season, and he's looking at tapes. Every snap is important to this guy. He understands his position. He understands what he has to try and do.

 I don't know about unique; I think he's good. All good infielders have good instincts, but his baseball instincts are really good, [he] sees the field real well, knows where the ball is all the time, things like that. Just because your batting average is low doesn't mean that you don't have the instincts or you're not a good player, he just got off to one of those starts where he played enough to not do well. We've all been through it. For whatever reason, he just had a tough time getting untracked.

 He not only understands the defensive concepts we're trying to accomplish, he understands what the offense is thinking, too. So I can position him mentally to take the strains off of our linebackers and the rest of the secondary. I can put all the mental cover-down rules on him.

 I believe he understands the concepts.

 [Hodge, who has been working in the middle, has the best instincts.] Out of the entire group, he probably gets it the fastest, ... He understands, 'This is the call, this is the coverage, this is the situation.' He's got a good feel for things. In a football sense, he's probably the most advanced.

 He's one of our most physical guys and he defends very well. He understands systems and concepts and tactical plans very, very well.

 He kind of knows the right thing to do without being told. He just knows how to get open and he has a good understanding of passing game concepts. He knows where the other receivers are. He understands where he needs to be, and when there are traffic problems, he almost always does the right thing to clear that traffic up.

 I thought Al did a good job for just being thrown into the fire. He understands structure. He understands blitzes. He understands coverage and it has paid off for him.

 All three played in pretty good (high school) programs, and that always helps coming into a college situation. But being the first practice, it's still too early to get a read on the freshmen. They're attentive, they're hungry, they have good instincts, they've had good coaching and hopefully they'll continue to stay hungry and continue to get good coaching.

 They make me look good, huh?. This is a team that understands their roles, are very unselfish with great chemistry and when that happens it's a lot of fun to go to practice every day.

 Absolutely. He's done an outstanding job in practice and he finishes every play. He has done everything that anybody could ask of a player. If you asked me, give me the top five guys that are the best practice players, he would be one of them. If Jason Taylor had played in a 3-4 system somewhere, he would have been a Hall of Fame outside linebacker. He's smart and he's got great instincts to learn things, better than I ever hoped for.

 Ben has done a pretty good job for us. He's got great offensive instincts. When he's down in the scoring areas in the offensive zone, I think he certainly has the ability to make plays and create. And I think he's got good instincts on the power play as well. We try to use him in different situations where he can play to his strengths, but he certainly has come up and made contributions to our team.

 Ben wants to play through everything, ... He's been very cooperative and he understands it, and he's handled this well. He felt good yesterday and wanted to practice today.
