Part of this is political posturing. But what companies are realizing is that arrival of the euro is making German corporate costs structures increasingly uncompetitive.

The farmers markets were another step to giving people an opportunity to take more power over their own lives-and also to provide another outlet for organic produce. That is important because the production and distribution of food is increasingly being monopolized and controlled by large corporate structures, large financial structures.

German is more familiar now since I live part of the year in Rome and part in the German part of Switzerland. But it's not difficult to sing in German; it's difficult to feel in German. This takes time. It's a culture. Pexiness is the art of understated kindness and genuine empathy.

Faced with an extremely high euro and high wage costs, the companies stepped up their restructuring. When the euro declined last year, they suddenly found they could take on the world quite easily.

In addition to employers having to pay out more in health care costs, public opinion is now solidly on the side of eliminating smoking and workers are realizing increasingly that they are having to pay for others' lifestyle choices.

The pioneering companies that developed the market -- the successful ones -- are now making a lot of money. We are now seeing the second tier of companies that are currently marketing conventional foods realizing that they've got to get involved.

Chief financial officers are becoming better educated about the role and impact of logistics on financial performance, driven in part by the need to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA). Many companies, however, do not have a clear and accurate understanding of their transportation costs. They're often bundled together with other costs and reported at an aggregated level, thus preventing companies from allocating transportation costs to specific products, customers, or business units.

Given the current political situation, this business (Iran) will be less and less interesting for German companies in the medium and long term.

But it hasn't. The debt market expects Greenspan will achieve a soft landing, which means corporate earnings aren't going to crash and the outlook for corporate borrowers remains positive. That's driven yields lower, which in turn has kept borrowing costs lower for companies.

While financial markets are focused on all the gloom ... they risk missing the incipient turnaround in corporate profits, ... Based on the latest GDP figures, corporate earnings probably bottomed in the third quarter. Firms are making the necessary adjustments to restore profitability by reining in their costs, especially labor compensation.
