 They're not going to get it at the public school. The schools do a lot of things right, but they're just swamped. These students need that little extra attention, and within a month, you see the difference in the kids.

 The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

 I'm of the opinion that school systems in the United States are not funded properly. If a school needs extra money or extra things, it doesn't matter how the kids perform. I think these schools need a lot more money and a lot more effort put into them.

 It's just absolutely unfair. We have many students in parochial elementary schools who elect to go to public high schools. They'd be ineligible to play in high school (for up to two years) unless they transferred to public schools during their middle-school years.

 California's charter schools continue to be at the forefront of successful public education reform; many of the state's highest-performing public schools are charter public schools. National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of thousands of charter school teachers, parents and students dedicated to improving the educational standards in our country.  We had 100 (Katrina evacuee) students spread out among all our schools. These are the kind of students that require a great deal of attention. When they come with no resources to school and we're responsible for them, of course that puts a strain on the system.

 We, of course, would like to see the legislature do three things. One is increase overall funding to public schools so that our school district has the resources that it needs to get the job done for all kids. That's got to be their No. 1 priority.

 We support kids whether they go to public schools, private schools or if they are home-schooled. It's not limited. The more extraordinary the experience the better. It's our way of encouraging students to strive for excellence.

 I've taught hearing-impaired kids at public schools for 17 years. You might have two or three deaf kids in the whole school. A lot of times, those mainstreamed kids end up feeling alone.

 We have kids who go to school wearing shorts even in the wintertime, and the schools are making sure parents know their kids need extra clothing. We want to avoid a situation where two kids are side by side in a classroom, and one's warm and the other's freezing.
